Queens At A Glance Borough-Wide Statistics

From: Population Estimates Program US Bureau of the Census Released September 4, 1998; and Bureau of the Census - Counties/Profiles 1996

Recognized as the 2nd most populated and the largest Borough of New York City, Queens is often referred to as the "bedroom" of Manhattan. It covers 71,800 acres of rolling, rich land, once known for large international nurseries, greenhouses, and productive family farms. Largely residential today, Queens Borough is loved for its tree-lined streets, distinct communities, schools, universities and outstanding recreational parks, golf courses and waterfront.
Home to over 2 million people (over 47% homeowners), Queens provides a community-based quality of life within easy commuting distance to Manhattan. Express buses, subways, parkways, ferries and bridges, as well as the Long Island RR connect Queens to the metropolis. There are also many businesses in the Borough; over 37,000 retail and manufacturing concerns were registered in Queens in 2006. During the 100 years since incorporation into the City of New York, Queens has absorbed generations of immigrants.
While ethnic populations represent a minority, their settlement has created a number of vital, ethnic neighborhoods where residents clearly enjoy the luxuries American wages offer. Eager consumers, Queens' ethnic residents are often first to adopt the latest technology such as cable television, computers, and cellular phones.
